Hancock: Population 1,736
Hancock is the westernmost town in Washington County and sits on the Potomac River at the narrowest point of the sate of Maryland.
Named for ferryman Joseph Hancock, Jr., the town is rich in history and recreation opportunities. The town boasts a 48,000 square foot antique and crafts mall and many unique specialty shops. The Hancock Historical Society Museum focuses on local history and transportation along the C&O Canal, the National Pike and the Western Maryland Railroad.
Hancock is also a bicycle enthusiast friendly town. With bike racks, a bike livery and several access points to the Western Maryland Rail Trail, cyclists can break in town to visit the many specialty shops and restaurants before continuring on their journey. The C&O Canal National Historical Park features biking and hiking trails as well as a re-watered portion of the canal.
