Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) has the second-longest runway in the State of Maryland, behind only Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport.
Airport Facts
Washington County is less than 90 minutes from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) Airport. Handling over 21 million passengers and 26 million pounds of freight and mail a year, BWI is one of the fastest growing major airports in the United States. Two other international airports are also within a 90-minute drive: Dulles International (IAD), west of Washington D.C., and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), in the heart of D.C.
Aero Defense Presence
Over the past five years, Washington County has enjoyed
watching a very strong aero defense presence develop at
the Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR). With companies
committed to helping the Department of Defense protect the
United States, many multi-million dollar defense contracts have
been awarded to HGR businesses.
Due to the increased workforce needs of HGR companies, economic development and local government officials are helping to recruit Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, a federally certified aviation mechanics technician school at HGR to assist residents in attaining the training necessary to compete for local aero defense positions. According to the Aerospace Industries Association, the aero defense employment sector is faring better than most other industries and the average wage pays more than $30 per hour. It is in Washington County’s best interest to support this effort as it will help provide higher paying jobs to citizens and help build upon HGR’s reputation as a great place to locate a business.
Read below to see how HGR companies are involved in the success of this multi-billion dollar industry:
