Hancock is the western most town in Washington County, situated on the Potomac River at the narrowest point in the state of Maryland, and is home to over 1,500 residents. The town boasts a 48,000 square foot antique and craft mall and many unique specialty shops. Hancock is also a bicycle enthusiast friendly town. With bike racks, a bike livery and several access points to the Western Maryland Rail Trail, cyclists can take a break in town to visit the many specialty shops and restaurants before continuing on their journey. The C&O Canal National Historical Park features biking and hiking trails as well as a re-watered portion of the canal.
History:
In the 1730s, European settlers discovered Hancock. The town is named for ferryman Joseph Hancock, Jr., who ferried travelers, traders and commerce across the Potomac River. The Hancock Historical Society Museum focuses on local history and transportation along the C&O Canal, the National Pike and the Western Maryland Railroad.
